| N-Acetylcysteine
is given 75mg/kg divided in 3 doses a day for 2 weeks, then every
other day. It is made as a 20% solution and can be diluted
with chicken broth, using 1 part drug and 3 parts chicken broth.
We recommend
that you use low sodium (preferably NO sodium) chicken broth to
dilute the medicine with, because a high sodium content tends to
cause nausea, diarrhea, and general stomach upset. If your
dog still experiences stomach discomfort, giving fresh ginger 30
minutes before and giving the NAC with food (or on a full stomach)
often reduces this effect. If your dog is still experiencing
problems with diarrhea, try giving 1/2-1mL blackberry root (as tea
or in food) every 8-12 hours until the diarrhea stops. If
it still persists beyond 72 hours or is watery, you should seek
veterinary care. Both the ginger and blackberry root extract
can be bought at a local health food store or you
may order it from us here at Westlab.
Once you
receive your dog's medication, we ask that you please REFRIGERATE
the NAC, and KEEP THE LID TIGHTLY CLOSED. Due to the constant
opening of the medicine the drug has a tendency to lose its potency
and its desired effects. Refrigeration will help stop this
breakdown.

Aminocaproic
acid inhibits the process of fibrinolysis (the breakdown of fibrin)
and can reverse states that are associated with excessive fibrinolysis.
Fibrin is a protein that is necessary for blood clotting.
Degenerative Myelopathy is caused by an autoimmune response attacking
the nervous system of dogs, which leads to progressive neural tissue
damage. Since this is an auto-immune response, immune-complexes
circulate in the blood leading to endothelial cell damage in the
vessels of the central nervous system. This causes fibrin
to be deposited around blood vessels. When this fibrin degrades,
inflammatory cells are stimulated to migrate into the lesions, which
leads to tissue damage. Aminocaproic acid can stop this process.
Aminocaproic
acid is made in a 250mg/mL oral solution. You can also mix
this with chicken broth, using 2 mL of the drug and 1 mL of chicken
broth. This medication is given three times a day with or
without food.
We also
recommend using low or no sodium chicken broth to make the medicine
more palatable for oral usage. The low sodium content will
also help reduce the occurrence of stomach upset.
Aminocaproic
acid can be stored at ROOM TEMPERATURE with the lid TIGHTLY CLOSED.

Antiox-Q is a mixture of the vitamin regimen recommended for dogs with degenerative myelopathy. This is a more convenient form of medication, because it enables your dog to get all of the correct amounts of the vitamins in a single dose instead of many doses of each individual vitamin. Antiox-Q is given 5 mL twice a day if your dog weighs more than 50 pounds, or 2.5 mL twice a day if less than 50 pounds. Each 5 mL dose of Antiox-Q consists of all the following vitamins at their recommended dosages:
Bovine Cartilage/Gelatin
Co-Enzyme Q-10
Vitamin E
GLA (Gammalinolenic acid)
Omega-3 Fatty acid
Selenium Yeast
Gingko
Beta Carotene
Olive Oil
Pantothenic acid/Calcium Pantothenate

Since Antiox-Q is a suspension, it needs to be SHAKEN WELL before administration. This product has a tendency to stain, so BE CAREFUL! Keep the lid TIGHTLY CLOSED, and DO NOT REFRIGERATE, because this would cause the drug to harden and would make it more difficult to administer. This medication can be taken with or without food.
We also make another form of Antiox-Q called Antiox-QCB. This formulation contains all of the previously mentioned vitamins in addition to Curcumin (500mg) and Bromelain (200mg supplying 2400 GDU per gram), which are natural anti-inflammatory agents. Bromelain is an extract of pineapple stems which has been shown to decrease circulating immune complexes, while Curcumin (the yellow pigment of turmeric plants) is a potent anti-inflammatory agent. Taken together, these two herbs assist in the absorption of each other from the gastrointestinal tract, which increases their effects. However, this product is normally recommended for those dogs who are currently taking anti-inflammatory agents such as Rimadyl or Prednisone. Please do not stop Rimadyl or Prednisone without first consulting your vet.
Antiox-QCB also needs to be SHAKEN WELL before administration and has a tendency to stain. Keep the lid TIGHTLY CLOSED, and DO NOT REFRIGERATE.
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO ADMINISTER ANTIOX-QCB ON AN EMPTY STOMACH; otherwise the curcumin and bromelain will not have their natural anti-inflammatory effects.
